| BEARSVILLE,
New York, June 5, 2002 - Sending another
signal that it is positioned to command a significant
share of the home telemonitoring market, LifeLink Monitoring,
the industry's only comprehensive telemonitoring service
provider, announced today that a mutual fund managed
by Fidelity Management & Research Company has increased
its funding of the company to $4 million. Fidelity's
most recent investment follows a series of significant
business wins for LifeLink Monitoring, including the
recent expansion of its service portfolio and agreements
with some of the nation's leading health care organizations.
LifeLink Monitoring's home telemonitoring services enable
patients with chronic conditions to monitor their vital
signs and symptoms at home and receive immediate feedback
regarding their progress towards goal. The services
act as an early warning system as well as a management
tool that offers clinicians a daily window into the
health of each patient. By receiving a steady stream
of objective vital signs data and subjective reports
of symptoms, clinicians are able to detect early signs
of trouble and provide more timely medical care. This
results in fewer hospitalizations, improved health and
reduced costs associated with chronic illnesses such
as congestive heart failure and diabetes.
"Home telemonitoring is reshaping the management
of chronic illnesses," said Art Avedisian, president
and CEO of LifeLink Monitoring. "LifeLink Monitoring
is determined to lead the way with an all-inclusive
solution that makes it easy for our customers to integrate
telemonitoring into their standard of care and realize
lower medical claims costs and greater operating efficiencies."
While other telemonitoring companies place the burden
of telemonitoring on their customers by selling them
the equipment, LifeLink Monitoring includes equipment
as part of a complete service package available for
a low monthly fee. Services include inventory management,
equipment delivery, patient training, customer service
support, patient compliance support, and equipment retrieval
and refurbishment. "Our customers have found our
service-based model to be ideal," Avedisian said.
"They have only to enroll patients and we deliver
data. They don't want the hassles of managing monitoring
inventories, adding technical staff to maintain data
servers, and refurbishing returned equipment. They want
the patient data period. And that's what we deliver."
With this end-to-end convenience comes cost savings.
For disease management organizations, LifeLink Monitoring
services improve case managers' productivity by allowing
them to focus on the sickest patients first. Managed
care organizations realize immediate savings by correctly
distinguishing between patients with hypertension and
those with "white coat" or artificially elevated
hypertension. Home health agencies extend nursing capacity
by greatly reducing the needed number of at-home visits.
On the Move in Telemonitoring
The Fidelity investment is the fund's third funding
of LifeLink Monitoring in 18 months. Recently, the company
also signed an agreement with AdvancePCS, the nation's
leading health improvement company. In January, after
several years of offering the country's only blood pressure
telemonitoring service, the company expanded its service
offering by introducing remote monitoring of weight,
heart rate, blood pressure and blood glucose as well
as patient self-reported symptoms.
"We believe that Fidelity's latest investment will
be helpful as we continue to expand our efforts,"
Avedisian said, adding that disease management for chronic
illness alone is predicted to be a $10 billion industry
by the end of the decade. "Disease management,
home health care and managed care organizations are
all looking for ways to improve outcomes for chronically
ill patients while controlling costs," he said.
"LifeLink Monitoring's services are already playing
a key role in that effort."
