| IRVING, Texas
and BEARSVILLE, New York, Dec. 12, 2001
- AdvancePCS (Nasdaq: ADVP), the nation's leading health
improvement company, and LifeLink Monitoring Corporation,
a leading provider of biometric home telemonitoring
services, today announced a strategic relationship to
provide telemonitoring services to clients of AdvancePCS.
These services add power to AdvancePCS' current health
improvement programs in hypertension, congestive heart
failure and diabetes. The agreement will result in improved
management of chronic diseases, increased compliance
with treatment plans and reduced expenditures for hospitalization,
home nursing and office visits. It also will reduce
the cost of prescription medications for some patients
and improve drug compliance for others.
The telemonitoring system employs patient-friendly technologies
to monitor blood pressure, heart rate, weight, blood
glucose and self-reported symptoms. Respiratory function
and other telemonitoring services will be added in the
coming months. At the press of a button, patients can
monitor one or more of these parameters and send their
readings over regular telephone lines to the LifeLink
Monitoring data center. Patients receive immediate voice
feedback, including congratulations or instructions
to call their doctor, if appropriate. The objective
data are then summarized, integrated with pharmacy utilization
and compliance data supplied by AdvancePCS, and reported
to the patient's physician or case manager.
"This agreement represents an enhancement to our
current product offering and aligns well with our goal
of improving the health of our members while decreasing
costs for our clients," said Andrew Garling, AdvancePCS
senior vice president, clinical operations. "It
is part of AdvancePCS' commitment to continuously improve
our comprehensive portfolio of disease prevention and
management programs."
AdvancePCS' health improvement programs address diseases
and conditions that affect millions of Americans and
account for a disproportionately large share of health
care expenditures. The health improvement portfolio
promotes health care practices that are consistent with
the most recently published clinical guidelines. Each
program is designed to work in conjunction with the
care management and quality initiatives of AdvancePCS
clients.
Home biometric telemonitoring provides an effective
source of clinical information for physicians and patients,
improving the diagnosis and treatment of chronic conditions.
It offers health care providers higher quality and more
timely information than they collect during office or
home nursing visits. It also provides a more accurate
and comprehensive understanding of a patient's condition,
better treatment plans and improved results.
Art Avedisian, president and CEO of LifeLink Monitoring,
said, "We're very excited by AdvancePCS' companywide
commitment to health improvement. The combination of
AdvancePCS' utilization and compliance data with our
objective telemonitoring data and subjective patient-reported
symptoms offers physicians and case managers an unprecedented
capability to diagnose and treat chronic diseases."
The agreement will enable AdvancePCS and LifeLink Monitoring
to provide turnkey telemonitoring solutions to AdvancePCS'
payer clients. LifeLink and AdvancePCS will manage all
aspects of telemonitoring without the need for the clients
to add staff, devote resources or make capital investments.
The service includes physician education, patient enrollment,
hardware inventory management, device activation, customer
service activities, data collection and reporting.
