Patients at five Kaiser Permanente health
centers were surveyed after using the LifeLink Monitoring
home
blood pressure service in a year-long clinical trial: They
reported a high degree of satisfaction, citing better blood
pressure
control, better communication with their doctor, and better
understanding of their condition. Results included:
- 93% said they were “Satisfied”
or “Very Satisfied”
- 88% said they would “recommend
the service for a friend who has high blood pressure”
- 75% reported better blood pressure control
- 85% said home telemonitoring improved
communication with their doctor.
Several patients said that knowing their
blood pressure, especially the average, increased their feelings
of confidence, and reinforced medication taking, diet and
exercise. Compliance data provide additional confirmation
of patient satisfaction. In the first five months of the study,
63% of patients were fully compliant with home telemonitoring,
and 35% were sufficiently compliant to be clinically useful.
- “It has been great because
I haven’t needed to go into Kaiser since my home blood
pressure readings have been well controlled. The doctor
has made adjustments to medications [as a result of monitoring]
and now my blood pressure is under even better control.”
– Roberta M.
- “It has come in very handy because
the doctor keeps adjusting my medications. The doctor has
been monitoring my blood pressure very closely.” –Darlene
R.
- “It has worked wonderfully for
me. I was very happy because I didn’t have to run
to Kaiser all the time [to have my blood pressure checked]"...
"Sometimes I had a headache, I would check my pressure
and it wasn’t
up.”...“I have been surprised
because my blood pressure has been fairly good…It
gives me peace of mind.”...“I also made some
diet changes.” –Linda P.
- "It has helped me because I don’t
have to see her [the physician] as often. I feel great
knowing
that she knows.” –Theresa T.
- "I feel it has been very successful
because as the doctor says – ‘You have the
worst case of white coat hypertension I have ever seen’.
I had been prescribed so many medications and had severe
side
effects. My doctor says that I was being over medicated.”...“Also
before I was going in quarterly, and now that has been
cut down as well.” – June S.
- "It has given me a chance to see
how my pressure is—when it is up or down. Overall
I’m
really glad that I was selected to be in the program. I
know now that when I am stressed my blood pressure goes
up. For example, when my sister passed away it shot up.”...“My
doctor has advised me to try to relax as much as possible
and that has really helped.” –Judith
W.
- “It was a great way to travel longer
during my pregnancy. When my pressure started to get high
and I was on bed rest, it saved me a lot of trips to the
doctor. She was watching me… I had high blood pressure
my other two pregnancies, and I couldn’t keep such
good control as I did this time.” -Kara A.
